I’ve hated our current bedroom wallpaper for a while (have a look at it here). While there is nothing wrong with this classic 1950s-style Sanderson print, it felt very me circa 2012 and not 2023! Plus as our bedroom is quite a big airy space with multiple windows, I craved a darker moodier vibe to make the room cosier. I was overjoyed to be introduced to Photowall who asked to work with me on a new bedroom – I jumped at the chance to create a look that felt more now. With hundreds of designs to choose from, from funky patterns to murals of nature; I had my work cut out to find something that would work as there was so much choice!
My first job was to select my favourites, but thankfully I could filter down to flowers that I knew I wanted. I selected 17 designs and after much deliberation, I chose Lilacs Grail. Lilacs are my favourite flower but ultimately I likes how one side was plain black, adding to the dark cozy feel that I wanted. And here it is…
Ordering was simple; you choose the design you want and input the dimensions of your wall and immediately the website shows you what it will look like. I wanted the dark side to be on the right as I have a dressing table there and didn’t want to cover the flowers too much. There was a button to press to switch the design the other way. If you want further tweaks you can select a design change (which costs £5) and work with their team to get the image that you want or need.
It arrives in one roll with clear cut lines for each piece. They are all clearly labelled so you put them up in the right order. This made it super easy to hang thankfully as we are not wallpaper experts! I love the end result; if I have one but of feedback (and why you may want an expert to hang it) is matching up the black was tricky as there was a faint pattern to it. Plus (I find this with all dark wallpaper) if it moves at all, you see the side of the paper which is always light; I really wish dark wallpaper was made with dark sides/back.
This goes really well with our new bed, which we treated ourselves to at Christmas. It is a pink velvet ottoman bought from Habitat with a 1920s feel to it. This meant that our modern furniture (the only room with modern furniture in it) had to go and so started our search for bedside tables. It is so hard to find good ones as they’re always so small and we need all the storage we can get! My husband found the 1960s bedroom suite in a charity shop which really works. The handles in particular feel 1920s in style mirroring the bed shape too.
Everything else in the room is as-is. Same homewares, linen, vintage bags on the wall and even the same grey walls. A great update with minimal fuss!
