Ancient historical sites, diverse dramatic scenery and mouthwatering cuisine wherever you go, Europe is an incredible vacation destination. Exploring the continent’s best trails on two wheels is a wonderful way to slow down and soak up every second of your trip and get under the skin of your chosen country.
Amalfi Coast
The UNESCO-listed Amalfi Coast in southwest Italy is one of the most beautiful destinations for biking tours in Europe, especially in May and June when the wildflowers are in bloom. Pretty coves and colorful communities front captivating cliffs and the serene Campania countryside while the enchanting islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida sit just offshore.
A long paved path winds along the cliffside so you can be sure of gentle terrain as you cycle. The undulating route is easy to follow independently, or you can get a guide to lead you and describe your surroundings as you go. In the evenings, indulge in delicious pizza and pasta dishes.
Wild Atlantic Way
For a coastal vacation with a completely different character, you can’t do better than Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Sunshine might be in short supply, even in the summer, but the scenery is spectacular regardless of the weather – and the cooler temperatures are pleasant to cycle in.
As you peddle the most picturesque stages of this 2500km trail, you’ll pass low craggy cliffs, lush rolling hills interspersed with farmland, long stretches of soft sand and pebble-strewn beaches. In the less remote regions, you’ll find jolly pubs with traditional live music and great ales.
Camino de Santiago
Restore calm to your mind and soul on a slow cycling tour of the Camino de Santiago, one of the oldest pilgrimage routes in the world. The entire trail is 500 miles long, so most people limit their experience to the final portion, ending at St James’ supposed burial place. Those seeking more of a challenge can attempt the entire Camino Frances section which crosses the Pyrenees before winding out to the northwest Spanish coast.
The Camino is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its heritage and the breathtaking mountains, woodland and river-lined valleys it passes through.
Loire Valley
You’ll find yourself in a fairytale the moment you step into the Loire Valley. Known as the Garden of France because of its wealth of picturesque parks from the Renaissance period and fertile climate, this region is unapologetically regal with grand chateaux and vast terraced vineyards.
Unwind in utterly peaceful surroundings as you peddle quiet trails between villages and towns, gliding through quintessential French countryside, dappled woods and gorgeous gardens. For your accommodation, you can choose between stately manors with old-world décor and charming authentic houses on working farms with fresh eggs and honey.
