What’s your favourite part of Christmas? Mine has always been Christmas Eve. From a small child, I have always loved the feelings of excitement and anticipation as the day draws to a close and the traditions that are put in place for Santa’s imminent arrival. Now as a vintage loving adult, I love to experience these rituals with my own children and see their excitement but also to snuggle up with my loved ones on Christmas Eve once everything is done to have a cosy vintage Christmas night in – a calm before the storm of the next days festivities.
1. Every Christmas Eve as a child I was read the poem of ‘The Night Before Christmas’ by Clement C Moore. It captivated me and still has that effect on children today. One of the most beautiful version has illustration by Arthur Rackham and really is a book you’ll want to keep forever. This hardback version also including Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’ (also with Rackhams illustrations) will definitely become a family heirloom.
2. A plate for Santa’s mince pie (and Rudolf’s carrot!) is a Christmas Eve tradition that cant be missed. Many families have plates that have been handed down or you can buy some great new versions at John Lewis, Matalan and TK Maxx. We love to use a vintage Christmas plate and this Poole Barbara Furstenhofer one is just perfect…
3. How about a vintage milk bottle and straw for Santa’s glass of milk? These 1970’s American ones are great – just add a red and white retro striped straw! Santa is a busy man – he can take his milk to go!!!
4. ‘The stockings were hung on the fireplace with care…’ You cant have Christmas Eve without hanging up your stocking and this 1950’s felt one from Etsy is just adorable.
5. For that cosy night in the ultimate ‘feel-good’ film has to be ‘Its a Wonderful Life’. This special edition BluRay includes the original 1946 poster and limited edition art cards. You will never then forget that ‘…every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings’ as you snuggle up and wait for Christmas day to arrive.
Enjoy one of the most wonderful nights of the year. Have a wonderful Christmas doing the things you love with the people you love.
