Welcome to the A-Z Of Menopause – this is B for Bloated Belly.
How to deal with a Bloated Belly
I’ve always struggled with a bloated belly but it has gotten so much worse during perimenopause. I start the day and my belly is pretty flat but by night time I look about 6 months pregnant.
Does anyone else get this?
If you’re like me, it makes you paranoid, it makes you feel uncomfortable, it’s painful and you basically just feel really crappy.
And guess what, it’s down to those fluctuating hormones again.
When your oestrogen levels are higher it results in your body retaining more water, which then leads to a horrible bloated belly.
So what can you do to help?
Here’s what you can do, (this doesn’t always work for everybody),
- you can review your diet, avoid dairy, and also don’t eat gas-inducing vegetables like onions,
- ditch chewing gum and fizzy drinks,
- exercise regularly,
- drink loads of water which might feel counterintuitive because you are sort of full of water, but it actually really helps,
- I’ve found that apple cider vinegar works, I take it in gummy form just brought from Amazon or online rather than drinking it, because it tastes disgusting,
- slow down while you’re eating, and chew your food more because if you wolf it down that doesn’t help.
If you do all this and it still isn’t helping, do speak to a doctor because they need to check that you haven’t got any other underlying health conditions.
The most important thing you can do if you’re struggling is to talk to somebody, talk to your partner, talk to your friend, talk to a doctor, talk to a menopause specialist, talk to someone.
And if you’ve got no one to talk to, have a look at my community, because that can help you too.
