How To Get Longer Eyelashes In Midlife And Beyond

One of the many menopause symptoms that can affect our self-esteem is hair loss. This is due to the female hormones, oestrogen and progesterone reducing. This, of course, continues into older age as we don’t get those hormones back. These hormones keep your hair healthy, and keep your hair in place – and not falling out.  This includes hair loss on our head and also our eyelashes. Ironically we can also get increased chin and upper lip hair – more hair where we don’t want it and less where we do!

18 months ago I stopped having eyelash extensions leaving me with short eyelashes which was to be expected. This has happened in the past when I stopped having extensions but they had always grown back. 18 months on my lashes are still really short which is really frustrating (and makes me want to go back to extensions). I have tried serums but as I also struggle with dry eye (yep another menopause symptom) I really wanted a mascara that would make my lashes look longer and fuller. Plus importantly, one that would not irritate my eyes which some serums have in the past.

Prime Prometics PrimeLash mascara is designed for us mature women whose eyelashes are getting thinner and shorter. They sent me three to try; navy, brown and black. I started with navy, a colour I haven’t really used before and immediately I could see it made my lashes look longer. It was a bit too subtle for me so I moved onto the black. Firstly, it was easy to apply – no lumps and clogging – and gave me a dramatic look. I don’t tend to wear eye makeup other than mascara so it is important to me that it works. It is also worth noting that it made my bottom lashes look loads longer!

What I really love is that it has a dual formula meaning the mascara itself is nourishing my lashes while I wear it. It lasts really well too! They’ve got a serum and also makeup for brows and lipsticks too. And what is REALLY refreshing is their desire to create a beauty line that doesn’t have the objective of making us look younger. But to celebrate our age and skin and look – something I am really passionate about.

What else can we do to look after our lashes especially when we age?

Be Gentle with Your Lashes

Handle your lashes with care. Avoid rubbing or pulling at them, as this can cause breakage and damage. When removing makeup, use a gentle touch and opt for a mild, oil-free makeup remover to avoid weakening the lash follicles.

Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle

Your overall health plays a significant role in the condition of your lashes. Make sure to follow a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Include foods like salmon, eggs, nuts, fruits, and vegetables, as they provide essential nutrients that promote hair growth.

Avoid Harsh Makeup Products

When it comes to eye makeup, opt for high-quality, hypoallergenic products that are gentle on your lashes. Avoid waterproof mascara and eyelash curlers, as they can cause dryness and breakage. Always remove your makeup before going to bed to allow your lashes to breathe and rejuvenate. PrimeLash is perfect for this!

Use a Nourishing Eyelash Serum

Consider incorporating a nourishing eyelash serum into your skincare routine. These serums are designed to strengthen and condition your lashes, promoting their growth and preventing breakage. Look for serums with ingredients like biotin, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins to nourish and hydrate your lashes effectively.

Regularly Moisturise Your Lashes

Just like the hair on your head, your eyelashes can benefit from regular moisturisation. Apply a small amount of natural oils such as castor oil, coconut oil, or olive oil to your lashes before bedtime. These oils help keep your lashes hydrated, improve flexibility, and prevent brittleness.

Avoid Excessive Mascara Application

While mascara can enhance the appearance of your lashes, overuse can lead to clumping, drying, and even breakage. Opt for a high-quality mascara that offers nourishing properties and applies it sparingly. Be sure to remove mascara completely at the end of the day to prevent lash damage. PrimeLash’s dual action objective means it cares for your lashes as well as being really good meaning I didn’t need to use much.

Be Mindful of Your Eye Health

Regular eye check-ups are crucial for maintaining healthy eyes and lashes. Conditions such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) and dry eye syndrome can impact lash health. If you experience any eye discomfort or notice changes in your lashes, consult an eye care professional for a comprehensive evaluation.

Age shouldn’t be a barrier to having beautiful and healthy eyelashes. By following these simple yet effective tips, especially choosing a great mascara designed for us, you can maintain the vitality of your lashes as you get older. Remember to be gentle, nourish your lashes, and incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle. Embrace the natural beauty of your eyes and enjoy long, voluminous lashes that enhance your overall appearance, regardless of age.
