Recently we were sent a new book to read called Fashion in the 1940s, written by Jayne Shrimpton and published by Osprey. It takes the reader through all the fashions of the time, from wartime utility styles to the New Look designed by Christian Dior.
You can clearly see how fashions evolved in a time of austerity, finishing with new styles such as bathing costumes and new materials.
It has original adverts featured also, which really takes you back to a time long ago.
For vintage loving brides there is a chapter on wedding gowns and suits and feature this beautiful parachute silk dress.
What I like most about this book is it is bite size yet packed with detail. It can fit in your (vintage) bag and be easily read on the train or with a slice of cake.
The author clearly knows her stuff and describes the era with authority and passion.
Thanks to Osprey for our copy.
