No matter how much you might love your home, if it’s a dark space, you’re never going to be truly comfortable there (unless you want a dark home that is!). The great thing is that a dark home can easily be given more light if you can work out how to increase the natural light that comes in. It might seem like a tricky task, but there are a number of different ways to help, and once you know what they are, you can make a start in brightening up your home. Read on to find out more.
Use Mirrors
Mirrors are a great way to bring in more natural light to your home, and placing them in the right spots can make a huge difference to how light a room is. Mirrors reflect any light that hits them and disperses it out into the room, so if you can hang your mirrors in front of any windows, you’ll instantly find the entire room brightens up.
Even better is the fact that you can make the mirror (or mirrors, if need be) part of your interior design. They come in a wide range of styles, shapes, colors, and sizes, so no matter what type of décor you have, there will definitely be a mirror that fits it. Plus, don’t forget about mirrored furniture, too; you can find mirrored coffee tables or cabinets, for example, that will brighten things up even more.
Change Your Flooring
A lot of the time, when you want to increase the natural light in your home, you’ll think about changing your wall colours so they’re lighter and reflect the outside light better. However, although this is a great idea, you shouldn’t ignore your floors; it might be that by changing your flooring to something lighter, you can really enhance the effect and brighten your room up as much as possible.
If you want to increase the natural light in any room, think about switching to lighter-coloured flooring like light hardwood, bamboo, a light carpet or rug, or light porcelain tiles. Of these, tiles are a great choice as they can also be polished, making them have a reflective surface that will allow natural light to bounce off them instead of being absorbed.
Trim Trees And Bushes
It might not be anything you’re doing (or not doing) inside your home that’s causing the problem when it comes to lack of natural light – it might be something outside. Take a look at your home’s exterior and see if there are any trees or bushes that are growing near your windows. It could be that these are obscuring not just your view but the amount of light that can come inside your home.
To maximise the amount of natural light you get, make sure you regularly trim these trees and bushes so they’re not in the way. You don’t have to get rid of them completely, but making them less of an obstacle can make all the difference.
Install Skylights
Although this idea will cost more and be more disruptive than many others on this list, it’s also potentially the best way to get more natural light in your home; installing skylights will open up the ceiling of your room and allow sunlight to flood in.
Not only will skylights give you more light, but they’ll also mean you have to use less artificial light, saving energy and reducing your bills. It’s best to speak to professionals about this idea, as skylights aren’t something you should tackle alone.
