5 ways to give your home a vintage autumn feel

Even though it has been warm of late, you can still feel autumn in the air. The misty mornings, all those cobwebs that I keep walking into and the yearly obsession with finding conkers has arrived, as has the need to put the heating on at night.

For me, it is time to cosy up my home, just in time for Saturday evenings watching Strictly Come Dancing (this is also a true sign that autumn has arrived!) so today I am sharing some great vintage homewares to do just that. Think warmth, think textures, think creating a different atmosphere, think snuggling up and keeping warm!

1. Candles

There is nothing more cosy than switching off the lights then lighting candles to create a soft glow. Making us think of Christmas too (which is just round the corner) candles can create a great, magical atmosphere in any room, even if it isn’t fully decorated. Finding a vintage candlestick is not that hard as there are so many different types out there. You could choose a 1920s pressed glass candleholder that matches a dressing table set. Or choose a brightly coloured 1960s Shatterline one or a serious yet totally cool 1970s stainless steel one.

2. Cushions

If you are going to spend more time on the sofa then add plumped up cushions and a throw to help you relax. This is also a great way to add some colour into your room especially if you are not brave enough to have a coloured sofa. We have a black leather 1960s sofa in our lounge so displaying red and teal cushions on top helps to brighten it as well as to feminise it.

3. Rugs

We have floor boards throughout our entire house so we need rugs to keep it warmer. We have 1970s Scandinavian Rya rugs on the floor downstairs which have a long woolen pile. This texture adds to the cosy feel of the room as well as keeping my feet warm!

4. Lamps

Create mood lighting throughout your home to give you that cosy feel as well as easing you into the darker evenings. We have them in most rooms, whether it be orange rocket lamps, glass Laura Ashley lamps in the bedroom and tall, teak standard lamps in the corners. My favourite is this large table lamp on our sideboard with a textured shade.

5. Baking

Finally, now that it is colder you need to eat more so get baking! With the final of the Great British Bake Off this week, it is now the perfect time to get your large Masons mixing bowl out and make some goodies. The smell of baking alone will make you feel cosier.
