Making decorations with the children can be fun and can make a great gift for the grandparents or even teachers this festive season. This month’s craft ideas are simple to make and need very few items to bring them alive (plus they look good too!).Today I am sharing how to make a Christmas tree using Kilner Jar screw bands and tomorrow I will share how to make baubles using the lids.
MATERIALS USED:
- Kilner jar screw bands (the rims that hold the lids in place)– you will need at least 10
- Wire, however fine ribbon or string will work easily well
- Small baubles
- A 50cm piece of ribbon or jute to finish
- Small lengths of ribbon or cotton
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
- Scissors
- Hammer and nail
HOW TO MAKE THIS PROJECT
Step 1: Lay out the screw bands into a Christmas tree shape on a flat surface. I chose to use one on the base as the trunk, but this is optional.
TOP TIP
Use 10 for the tree but if you want it to be larger, use 15.
Step 2: Cut 20cm lengths of wire using the scissors
Step 3: Attach all the bands together into the tree shape using the wire. Tie tightly at the back and cut any excess away. Fold these ends down, so they do not protrude.
Step 4: Once all are tied together, ensure that the tree shape sits flatly against a surface. If any are tied too tight the shape may buckle. If this happens, simply loosen the wire and re attach.
Step 5: Add a large bow to the base of the tree; I chose pink ribbon but jute also looks great.
Step 6: Attach small baubles inside each band using short lengths of ribbon.
Step 7: Hang the tree on the wall, by fixing a nail and slotting the top band over it. You may wish to add a ribbon tie to the top instead.
