J: Jessie Tait

Jessie Tait was born as Dorothy Tait in 1928 and became one of the most famous and well loved ceramic designers of the mid-century period. She joined Midwinter in 1946, staying until 1974. She went on to Johnson Bros and retired in 1990.

Her designs really sum up the 1950s with their quirky style and colourful playful nature. Her 1960s designs are also iconic, with most of us recognising them as a glance.

We love her Red Domino set with its cute red and white polka dot pattern which dates to 1953.

Then there’s Zambesi: the zebra like stripe which dates to 1954.

We love Jessie Tait too and have been collecting her trio sets for Midwinter for many years now and managed to pick up the very rare ‘Toad stool’ trio which goes for huge amounts of cash now!
