Tips for decorating your bedroom in a vintage style

Decorating a bedroom in a vintage style doesn’t have to be expensive. A typical vintage look can easily be created with light and soft colours, intricate patterns and textured fabric and distressed furniture to reflect a historical era.
All you may need to do to your bedroom is change some fabrics, add a few accessories and strip back existing furniture, all things which can be easily done on a budget. A retro bedroom theme can incorporate many different design ideas. It is a flexible style that can be easily moulded to your personal taste.
What Is Vintage?
In terms of furniture and decorating, ‘vintage’ refers to anything that is between thirty and one hundred years old; to be truly vintage it should be the best example of the most common style of the period. Of course, a vintage theme can also be created by transforming furniture or sourcing items that have been recently manufactured to reflect older fashions, as the best truly vintage items can be hard to come by unless you have a lot of good markets selling second-hand goods in your area.
Creating the Look
Distressed furniture and intricate, textured fabrics are the way to go for the main items of the bedroom, from wardrobes and dressers to bed linen and rugs. You might be able to find some great furniture in larger flea markets, charity shops, antique shops and garage sales. You might even be surprised as to what you could salvage from a skip. One man’s rubbish is another’s treasure, after all.
The most exciting part of decorating in this way is adding all the accessories that complete the look. Common accessories items to look out for are vintage handbags and hats, which can be made into a creative wall display. Vintage jewellery is another great way to add to the room. It can be displayed on mannequins or in shadow boxes or artfully placed on walls.
Antique mirrors and picture frames are essential in any vintage bedroom and if you can display art and pictures reflecting the era, then all the better. You could make a feature out of a vintage bookcase, displaying old books and information about the era. Large trunks are great for storage.
All these vintage touches will need to be accentuated with good retro ceiling lighting. To create a romantic atmosphere or highlight sections of the room, you can also brighten your room with floor lamps. Typical vintage-style lamps incorporate embellishments of cording, fringes and beading with some beautifully patterned fabrics.

Oh this post is perfect timing! I moved into our ‘new’ house, built in the thirties, and will be spending the next few months redecorating. Do you have any ideas for making long built-in wardrobes look a little more aesthetically pleasing? I was thinking about replacing the nasty sliding doors with paneling and then distressing it.
    Thanks x
