Create your own succulent or herb planter this spring, to add some colour and interest to your kitchen wall by upcycling a chopping board and jelly mould. Hang it above your work space so you can easily grab some leaves for your cooking!
MATERIALS USED:
- Chopping board with a handle
- Metal jelly mould
- Old bulldog clip
- Orange Annie Sloan paint and wax
- A small plant
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
- Paint brush
- Masking tape
- 3 screws and a washer
- Drill
- Sand paper (if not using chalk paint)
- Centre Punch and hammer
- Ruler and pen
HOW TO MAKE THIS PROJECT
Step 1: Using a ruler and pen, mark on the chopping board where you want the jelly mould to go, considering the size of the plant you want to display.
TOP TIP
Choose a chopping board with a handle as this will already have a hole in, which you can use to hang it on the wall.
Step 2: On the inside of the jelly mould, mark two positions where you it to attach to the board. You may need more than two, but this should be enough to keep it secure
Step 3: Using the centre punch and hammer, punch two holes in the mould where you have previously marked.
TOP TIP
If you don’t have a jelly mould you could use a wooden bowl, either whole or cut into halves.
Step 4: Using the pen, mark through these holes onto the board so you know where to drill
Step 5: Drill two holes and screw the mould onto the board. I screwed these at a slight downward angle so the screws don’t come out of the back of the board.
Step 6: Decide which area you want to paint; I chose the top half but you may wish to paint the whole board. If this is the case, you will need to paint it before you attach the jelly mould
Step 7: Mark the area by applying low tac masking tape in a straight line. Gently sand the area you want to paint to make sure the surface is smooth. Wipe down to make sure it is dust free.
Step 8: Apply two coats of chalk paint in the colour of your choice making sure you cover the sides and handle. Leave to dry fully.
Step 9: Apply a layer of wax over the top using a new brush or cloth. Leave to dry
Step 10: Drill a hole where you want to add your bulldog clip. I needed to add a washer as the hole of the clip was too big for the screw head and it would have fallen off.
TOP TIP
If you don’t have a bulldog clip you could always add a small hook.
Step 11: Plant your herbs or succulents in the jelly mould.
Then, simply hang on the wall. I use the bull dog clip to display photos or even my shopping list!
