Styling Tips: Vintage Garden Rakes as decoration

If you’ve read some of my blogs lately you’ll know I have recently moved into a new (but still older) house which we are trying to improve a little.  We’ve been clearing out areas and this week found some rusty old garden tools in the garage.   They were destined for the skip but all of a sudden I was reminded of a glass rack I saw in a hotel a little while back and I remember thinking what a great upcycling idea it was.  So this weeks blog is ideas on how to use a vintage rake head as home decoration – you will be amazed at the possibilities!

First off is the original glass rack idea.  A rack lends itself perfectly to do this.  The rake head can be hung with 2 screws under its top edge, or if you use a rake that has a filled in centre a hole can be drilled in its neck.  They also look lovely tied with string or ribbon.  I like the rusty look but if that’s a bit too shabby chic for you, sand down the metal to the level you prefer.   Also be careful the rake ends aren’t too sharp and if they are file them off slightly.  If you don’t fancy any DIY at all, there are quite a few versions to be bought on Etsy at the moment.

Just as glasses work perfectly so do kitchen utensils – I love how this looks using contemporary kitchen items for a fabulous clash of old and new –

For a great bedroom or dressing room idea use a vintage rake head as a jewellery holder – this can be used for belts, ties and various mixed accessories.  You name it, you can hang it!

Another great idea of how to use your new piece of home decoration is display your collections on them – anything that can be hooked can be used and the repetition of items looks just stunning.  A few rake heads could be grouped onto a wall to increase the styling effect.

For a lovely outdoor use how about a bird feeder?  A vintage rake looks totally at home in an outdoor setting and fixed to a tree or wall can make an outside space come to life.

And finally your new piece of home decoration can be used to display some gorgeous vintage Christmas baubles when December comes.  There really is no end to their uses….
