How to create a retro conservatory in your vintage home

When we think of conservatories it is easy to visualise rattan furniture with an 80s/90s vibe and a ceiling fan to cool you down as they are often are really hot spaces. But I am here to share that you can create a modern, retro conservatory so am sharing a few looks that I love (and dream of having!) and how to get the look.

First up is this WOW space reminding me of a green house with the window frames and the curved angles. What I love about this space is the pop of colour in the yellow chairs against the wooden table and concrete floor – this can be done by spraying or painting chairs in a vibrant colour and then distressing them so they look old. Alternatively buy a retro style yellow chair from LionsHome. The room has an industrial feel which means they can choose finishes that are not perfect such as the floor but add copper lights to bring a sense of luxe. I would kill for this space!

Now this is a real mid-century modern retro conservatory. Instead of choosing white as most do, they have chosen black and teak wood – it is a grown up space that is quite masculine. It even has a mirrored ceiling. I LOVE IT. Get the look by choosing a dark grey paint, vintage light fittings and add sheepskin throws and vintage trunks to add a few feminine touches.

Here is a boho retro conservatory where the owners have made a great dining space that overlooks the garden. The oversized wall hangings and plant give that San Fran feel – even the lamp shades are huge. I also love the shaggy rug contrasting against the terracotta tiles. Get the look by adding some macrame from LionsHome and more textures such as cushions and some rattan footstools.

And now the practical bit!

  • In the UK most conservatories do not need planning permission but there are exceptions to the rules so check with your local planning authority first.
  • You will need permission from the water board if you are building over sewage pipes
  • Consider if you need a party wall agreement if it joins next doors property.
  • Listed buildings as always are more complicated so always check  first!
  • They are hot spaces so if you are south facing consider blinds and air con/fan.

Saying this, they are a great way to add space to your home and often the cheapest way to do so, so have fun with your design and add those retro touches to create something a little different from the norm!

Do you have a cool conservatory? Do share with me!
