How to organise your children’s art (plus a FREE summer holiday diary printable)

If you are the parents of small children you will know that they come with a lot of paper. I literally had no idea that once I had children my home would be filled with art creations. I remember their first designs at nursery were simple scribbles or cuts on  paper when they had learnt to use a pair of scissors. They were so very proud of them  but I however, was a little underwhelmed and definitely didn’t want to hang them on the fridge. But you can’t just throw them away, and you certainly cannot hang them all out on display so I set up a system that keeps everyone happy!

Firstly, in their CREATE area of their playroom they have a filing system! This metal magazine holder from Homesense is wall hung by their desk and pencils. Kitty and Herbie have one section each, and the last section is for blank paper (recycled paper from my father’s company) and we put their work in their daily whether it is created here or at school.

You could use any type of wall hung magazine rack but I like this as it is white so blends into the wall space. The painted letters came from Hobbycraft.

I then clear this out regularly, and throw into the recycle bin as no amazing pieces end up in this rack.

Artwork that is display worthy bypassed the rack and goes straight onto the gallery wall. I have hung clipboards onto a feature orange wall which proudly display their most colourful work.

This acts as great wall art and keeps them away from my kitchen!

Finally, when there are too many left to display I will remove some from the clip boards and make a last decision: recycle bin or memory box upstairs. To be honest most go to the recycle bin as there are only so many you can keep.

This system works well for us and more importantly keeps my children happy!

Talking of organising, how many of you know what you are doing over the school holidays? Last year I found it really hard to juggle running my own business and looking after my children resulting in a stressed me, and sometimes bored children. I have designed a Summer Holiday Planner to help me this year and I have already plotted on most days what we are doing. I have arranged my working days with childcare already so I am clear on when I am working and not working.
