National Wallpaper Week: A Nostalgic Girl’s Room with vintage wallpaper

It is National Wallpaper Week this week, and as you know I love my vintage wallpaper. Three of our rooms have the original 1950s/60s paper still on the walls, something we fell in love with when we first looked around the house, almost 5 years ago now.

In our spare room we kept the bright pink flower power wallpaper; it is fun and always makes me smile ( and our guests staying over smile too)

In the hallway we have this 1950s yellow wallpaper. It was everywhere when we moved in, making the stairs, landing and hallway very claustrophobic, but reducing it down to just one wall, against white paint and glass lampshades it now works.

Finally, the wallpaper in our daughter’s room is also vintage and so, so pretty. It is a duck egg colour and has lilac tones within the pattern. We therefore based her room around this adding lilac blinds and rug as well as vintage bedroom furniture in green.

When invited by the wallpaper company, Graham and Brown to choose wallpaper to evoke a mood, I instantly chose nostalgic, pretty designs for Kitty’s room. Her room makes everyone smile, and takes them back to an age of simplicity, of old fashioned values when everything for a girl’s room was pretty.

But she already had the best original wallpaper so what should I do with the modern rolls?

My husband has made shelves in a dolls house shape out of offcuts of wood, which I have painted white. This effect is much cuter than standard shelves (I started by visiting Ikea, looking for suitable shelves but everything was just too modern for this space)

I have then back every room with a different wallpaper. I chose a textured duck egg colour by Graham And Brown called Yuan to match and tie in with the original paper on the walls.

I chose the pink dotty wallpaper as is fun for a little girl plus there are other hints of pink throughout the room including the letters KITTY on the wall. This is a Contour paper called Dotty.

I chose the other two florals to add that nostalgic feel to the shelves. They clash slightly, which I love, as again it reminds me of my grandma’s bedrooms where everything was floral, often not matching. It can be hard to mix patterns without creating a riot, but I think in a child’s room this shouldn’t matter. Both are Fresco papers and called Mia and Oriental.

I love how the bird is at the top of the roof.

The best thing about this is that Kitty loves it. She also loves her vintage framed pictures; most are 1970s cards.

I’ve hung the vintage button K which I made a few weeks ago. It is next to a vintage fabric Valentine’s day heart which I also blogged about earlier this year.

I love the eclectic feel to her room now – there’s lots to look at and keep her happy!

Hope you like the wallpaper! What have you been enjoying this National Wallpaper Week?
