My Vintage Bedroom

We decorated our vintage bedroom a few years ago as part of our 5 year renovation of our 1920s home. However, it never felt calm, which I really wanted for this room. I love white walls so the colour of my vintage collections simply pop out, but this didn’t seem to work here. I think it was due to the room being quite big….so it appeared even bigger with white walls. If we were in a hot country this would be perfect, but in cold old Blighty it just wasn’t cosy enough.

So a few weeks back I decided to paint it grey, choosing the colour Dust by Habitat. It has a lilac hue to it which is perfect as our curtains and accessories are aubergine in colour.

I love the whole white on white thing, with cream floors which is how most of the house looks, however with our high gloss cream furniture, it so needed a bit of warmth. The furniture is from Ikea, bought some years ago and wasn’t cheap. I’d love a teak look but as there is nothing wrong with this furniture I can’t face the thought of losing money on it if we sold it. That’s the problem with modern furniture – it doesn’t tend to hold it’s value.

The overall feel is 1950s/early 1960s with some space age shapes. The wallpaper is called Fifi by Sanderson, which is a modern version of a 1950s pattern, in lime and purple. The headboard is by G Plan and part of a bedside table set. We sold the tables and kept the board which not only looks good, but protects our wallpaper too.

We use the cases and trunks as extra storage (they are filled with my handbags!!)

The cocktail cabinet has my American box bags inside. I have framed some of my favourite magazine covers from the same era…I love the glamour of them.

They always match the colour scheme of the room – these are a mixture of makers, from Chance Glass to Whitefriars to Holmgaard.

I was so excited! I have  framed it in a retro style Ikea frame and it hangs next to the modern version. The vintage green cushions were bought from a local vintage fair in Milton Keynes.

I think they look so much better against the grey wall. I’ve simply used nails also painted in the grey colour.

I am really pleased with this simple change – for the price of one tin of paint I now have a bedroom I can relax in. Next up is the new spare room!

Fabulous! I can see all the work you’ve put into your room. It’s really stunning. And the white light fitting above your bed! We have the exact same one in our kitchen/diner, ours in purple. My husband bought it from Cafe Pop, Manchester, I think over 20 years ago now.
