When making improvements to their homes, people are increasingly choosing to replace their old solid panel doors with modern equivalents offering higher build quality and greater security yet offering a traditional vintage and retro look. The warmth of wood as a traditional material can be retained and really add value to your home and make your front door a more appealing entryway. Ours right now is an old aluminium door which we totally hate so have been busy looking for an alternative which isn’t UPVC white. For many of us nothing matches the sheer natural appeal and warmth of wood. Alas though, old solid wooden doors are subject to the forces of nature over time and prone to swelling, shrinking and warping. No amount of regular and time-consuming maintenance in the form of sanding followed by the application of coat after coat of varnish or paint can prevent this. Even the more hard wearing hardwood varieties will absorb and release moisture slowly over time with the change of season and climatic conditions leading to a movement in the wood and the potential for warping. What was once a true and straight perfectly fitting door can suddenly start to stick in the wetter winter whilst it worked perfectly in its frame during the warmer and drier summer. Do you find yourself waxing your doors to get them to work smoothly again when they start to scrape or even go to the expense of getting a a carpenter in to re-trim your door, not to mention all the inconvenience and disruption of having this work done? vintage front door 7

The good news is that new solid wooden doors are constructed using modern design principles often including an engineered glued core with a solid thick veneer giving you the benefit of both materials. A door that is designed and constructed not to warp and is resistant to the moisture retention and release, the expansion and shrinking that the environment throws at it, yet has the outward appearance of a traditional retro wooden door. It is worth spending some time to consider exactly what look you are aiming to achieve.  It easy to create a vintage look that echoes a golden age inspired by the past. It’s worth having a browse of a site which offers a range of different styles and materials, such as Todd Doors for example. That way you can think about functionality as well as picking up design inspiration. You may want to choose a traditional panel door which can come with either four or six panels or to install a door that includes a window or stained glazed unit to allow more light to flow into your hallway. Or you may want a door that is designed to be more distinct to a certain period such as Art Nouveau or Art Deco. The consider the colour as this will brighten up the look of your home as you will see in the pictures below. Personally we will be choosing light green to match our window boxes as well as being a timeless choice. It will also look great up against the newly painted cream walls. Here are some look I personally love: vintage front door 4
