Today’s DIY tutorial comes from Kate from  from DaphneRosa who make fabulous bouquets from fabric. She recently decided to spruce up her  garden and posted the finished project on Instagram. I loved it and I know you will too. Plus it is so quick and simple! Over to Kate:

“I wanted to grow some of my own herbs in my little garden so this DIY idea was born! It’s super easy, anyone can do it and also involves reusing and recycling so saving the planet too, win win!

Step 1 – Save some of your old baked bean cans, take off the paper labels and give them a good wash. I put mine through the dishwasher but a good old soap and hot water will do nicely. Make sure you don’t have any sharp edges from opening the can! Grab the paint colours you want to use a brush and some water. I used acrylic paint from Hobbycraft in some nice pastel and bright colours to add a pop of colour to our space.

Step 2  – Pierce your cans either side to create two small holes for your twine for hanging, approximately 1 – 2 cm from the top of the can. I used a tennis ball placed in centre of the can to press into and then a hammer and a nail to make the holes. Be careful of those fingers!

Step 3 – Paint your cans!! You shouldn’t need to water the paint down at all and can apply straight to the can. Holding the can at the opening end and working from bottom to top worked best for me to avoid getting really messy although it’s no fun if you don’t end up with a little paint on your fingers!!

I wanted a rustic look to my cans so I didn’t mind if it wasn’t a perfect finish and only added one coat of paint. If you wanted a completely solid colour I would recommend you add a thin first coat and then add a second when dry. Painting around the tin means that your brush strokes will follow the ridges meaning they should be less noticeable. I tried mixing two colours together for an ombré look which could be quite effective.

Step 4 – When your cans are dry cut some twine to your desired length and thread through the two holes you pierced earlier and tie so that the knot is inside the can. Use a double knot to ensure your twine stays in place. You should be left with a long loop from one side to the other for hanging later.

Step 5 – Fill your cans with compost & a little plant food leaving 2 – 3 cms at the top of the can, not covering the holes with the twine. Add your plant, I used herbs from a garden centre but you could use flowers or seeds whatever takes your fancy! Give it a good water and then you’re ready to display!

We knocked a few nails into our fence to hang them off but you could just display them on a table.

Gorgeous huh? This idea would work using old vintage tea caddy tins, mixed within the painted ones. Maybe decoupage the tins using print outs of old packaging stickers which you can find online. Or imagine them at your wedding with pretty flowers in.

If you make them make sure you send me a photo! Or better still, share it on Instagram and tag @yourvintagelife (me) and Kate @daphnerosaflowers.

I LOVE this idea. I’m doing up my Grandmother’s garden at the moment and I know that she’d love this. Thank you for sharing. X
