5 ways to create a springtime vintage bedroom

As spring is just around the corner, it is the perfect time to sort through your home, declutter and then create a new space that is light and fresh. When I used to work in home retail, the next few months were the time that people rushed out to buy new cushions, linens and vases as if they wanted to renew their environment and lifestyle just like the season itself does.

I think the perfect space to start is the bedroom. There is nothing better than waking up to sunshine and for me it makes me want to get up and start the day (unlike now, with these cold dark mornings!). With this in mind here are 5 ways to help you create a perfect spring time bedroom, with a vintage feel of course!

Bedding

There is nothing better than newly washed linen. Fact! Actually there is and that is new clean linen. Now is the time to invest in some crisp new designs and for me they need to be pastel shades to create the spring feel. I love these blue toile jaquard designs as they remind me of vintage Spode plates that my Grandma used to use.

Even in the spring it can get chilly so make sure you have a good duvet too. I swear by my goose feather and down duvet which keeps me warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Styling Tip: Display the vintage plates on the wall to carry the design through.

Cushions

A great bed is always finished off with a throw and cushions, I for one, have loads! My husband always wonders why we have 4 cushions each on the bed as well as two pillows! I love mixing old with new and especially love my pleated circular ones that are true vintage but you can find similar ones out there such as this Portia satin cushion.

Adding different textures on top of the cotton bedding will add interest as well as a touch of luxury.

Fragrance

Many people only use candles in the autumn and winter as they create a cosy mood but I say, burn them all year round! Fragrance can help change moods for their aromatherapy qualities as well as nostalgic ones (whenever I smell lilac I am transported back to being a child). Lavender can aid sleep so what better place to use a fragrant candle than in your bedroom.

Curtains

Now I have a problem with curtains; I don’t know why but I struggle to find ones that I like so tend to opt for blinds. But one thing’s for sure, you need a black out curtain to keep out that daylight until you are read to wake, especially in the lighter months. I feel that you should choose a plain curtain for two reasons: firstly you are less likely to tire of them and secondly, you can then go to town with pattern on your bedding, wallpapers and of course all the vintage treasures you have out on display. Being a traditional girl I prefer a pencil pleat curtain so you don’t need to mess about with a curtain pole and the eyelets always look a bit too modern for me.

The Finishing Touches

So you have your basics, it is now time to fill your room with vintage decorations to bring the room alive. The one thing you definitely need is a vintage glass vase to display your handpicked flowers in, or even an old tin.
